Cannes Film Festival Kicks Off With Johnny Depp

Date:

The 76th Cannes Film Festival began on Tuesday with the world premiere of the historical drama “Jeanne du Barry,” in which Johnny Depp portrays Louis XV of France. Michael Douglas was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony while his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their daughter Carys Zeta Douglas watched from the audience.

“I’m even older than the festival,” remarked Douglas, 78. The French Riviera festival, which will last for the following 12 days, was formally opened by Douglas and Catherine Deneuve. One of the most opulent film festivals in the world, Cannes draws celebrities, billionaires, business leaders, paparazzi, and fans to the French Riviera for premieres and to negotiate over global movie rights during the concurrent film market.

The movie choices for the opening night have generated some debate. “Jeanne du Barry,” which debuted in French theaters on Tuesday, was created in response to the highly-publicized trial in 2022 in which Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard accused one another of verbal and physical abuse. Depp received $10 million in damages from a civil jury, and Heard received $2 million.

The Cannes film festival has a number of high-profile movies scheduled, including Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny” by James Mangold. On Tuesday, the jury for the festival’s top honor, the Palme d’Or, was unveiled.
