The Simpsons is heading back to the big screen with a second theatrical feature film—nearly two decades after The Simpsons Movie hit theaters in 2007. The sequel was formally slotted onto Disney’s release calendar by 20th Century Studios in late September 2025, alongside a teaser-style poster built around a simple promise: Homer is “coming back for seconds.”
At the time of the announcement, the movie was dated for July 23, 2027, replacing an untitled Marvel release that had been parked on the same weekend. Since then, the studio has adjusted the schedule: 20th Century Studios later announced the film has shifted to Labor Day weekend, September 3, 2027.

Story details are still being kept under wraps. What’s clear is the intent: this is being positioned as a major theatrical event for one of TV’s longest-running franchises, rather than a streaming-only side project.
The first film is the obvious reference point for expectations. The Simpsons Movie expanded Springfield’s world into a full-scale disaster comedy—complete with Homer’s spectacular screwups and the town’s consequences—while proving the show could translate into blockbuster territory. It went on to earn more than $500 million worldwide.
For now, the sequel’s announcement is doing exactly what studios want early on: lock in a date, signal momentum, and let anticipation build while production details come later. With the new 2027 timing in place, the next real milestones to watch will be the first plot tease, creative-team confirmations, and—eventually—casting specifics beyond the core voice ensemble.
