Drew Barrymore Shares Her Daughters’ Reaction After Watching Scream for the First Time:“Mom, You Had It So Good!”

Date:

Drew Barrymore is used to being recognized for a career that spans decades, but the latest audience to weigh in might be the toughest critics yet: her kids.

On a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress and host shared that her daughters, Frankie and Olive, had just watched 1996’s Scream for the first time—during a sleepover with friends—without any nudging from her.

Barrymore said she doesn’t pressure them to watch her work, explaining that her daughters affectionately refer to her films as “mom movies” and that she prefers they discover them when they’re ready.

When they came home, their reaction was immediate—and hilarious. “They came home the other day and said they watched Scream, and they were like, ‘Mom, you got it so good in that movie! Oh my God!’” Barrymore recalled, as her Drew’s News cohosts Valerie Bertinelli and Ross Mathews laughed along.

Why “you got it so good” is a very Gen-Z-style compliment

The joke, of course, is that Barrymore’s character, Casey Becker, is one of the most famous early roles in horror history—memorable, iconic, and over quickly. Barrymore noted that her daughters were essentially reacting to how brief her appearance is in the film, adding that it’s been especially fun to see them reach an age where they can engage with her work (and comment on it) in real time.

What surprised Barrymore most wasn’t just that her daughters watched the movie—it was how inspired they seemed afterward. She shared that Olive has already floated a future Halloween plan: dressing up as Casey Becker “when I get a boyfriend in high school,” with her partner dressing as Casey’s on-screen boyfriend, Steve. Mathews called it “great” and “weird” at the same time—a reaction Barrymore enthusiastically agreed with.

The moment landed as classic Barrymore: equal parts proud, amused, and realistic about the whiplash of parenting tweens. In the same breath as she celebrated the milestone, she joked that her daughter might be thrilled by “mom movies” one minute—and slam the door the next.
