Drew Barrymore is opening up about how deeply her divorce from Will Kopelman continues to affect her — nearly a decade after their split. On a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress and talk show host told guests Joy Behar and Susie Essman that she hasn’t “fully recovered” from ending her marriage to Kopelman in 2016.
“I was so invested in that plan,” Barrymore said, referring to the family life she envisioned with Kopelman, whom she married in 2012 and shares two daughters with. When Behar remarked that she doesn’t recommend divorce, Barrymore responded bluntly: “Yeah, it destroyed me.”
The conversation also touched on the reality that parenting keeps exes connected long after a relationship ends. Barrymore agreed with her guests that co-parenting means the bond doesn’t fully disappear, adding that she and Kopelman have “grown a lot” through the years they’ve spent raising their children together.
Barrymore has spoken elsewhere about how heavy that period felt. In an interview tied to AARP The Magazine, she described the aftermath of the divorce as painful and said her “dream family was falling apart,” though she ultimately pushed forward for her kids.
Even so, she’s been clear that the experience changed her approach to relationships. In the same Drew Barrymore Show discussion, she reiterated that while she’s open to dating, she has no interest in getting married again.
