‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Screening Ends Early After Theater Ceiling Collapses

Date:

A screening of Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World was cut short in Washington state after part of a movie theater ceiling collapsed during the film, sending debris into the auditorium but, fortunately, leaving the audience unhurt.

The incident happened Tuesday night, Feb. 25, at Liberty Cinema in downtown Wenatchee, according to the Wenatchee Valley Firefighters union and reporting from Entertainment Weekly and PEOPLE. Firefighters said only two patrons were inside the theater at the time.

In a statement shared by the fire department, responders described the scene as an “interactive movie experience… just not the kind you want,” noting that no injuries were reported and that the cause of the collapse remains under investigation.

Additional details shared with local outlet KING 5 (and relayed by PEOPLE) said the moviegoers heard popping and cracking before one stood up to investigate and shouted “Run!” as debris began to fall. Fire officials later told The New York Times that a large section dropped into the first rows of seats.

Following the collapse, Sun Basin Theatres — which operates Liberty Cinema — announced the venue would be temporarily closed while the situation is addressed.
