Boston Rob Mariano won’t be lighting his torch for Survivor 50—and he says the decision was entirely his.
In late May 2025, Mariano addressed fans who were surprised not to see his name on the milestone season’s cast list. In an Instagram message later picked up by multiple outlets, he emphasized that production did reach out early, and he asked viewers not to blame the show or host Jeff Probst.

His reasoning was simple: “I have played so many times,” he wrote, adding that he feels “truly fulfilled” with his Survivor journey and wanted “my spot to go to someone else that deserved another chance.”
Mariano’s perspective carries extra weight because he’s one of the franchise’s defining figures. As People notes, he has competed five times—including his win on Survivor: Redemption Island—and also returned in a non-competing capacity as a mentor on Island of the Idols.
The timing of his explanation also dovetailed with CBS’ unusually early rollout for Season 50. Entertainment Weekly reported that the show revealed its supersized 24-player cast before filming, and that fans were invited to vote on several elements of the game ahead of the season’s production.
According to People, Survivor 50 is slated to premiere in February 2026, with the full lineup blending deep-cut legends and more recent-era standouts.
