Adrian Grenier is not expected to reprise his role as Nate Cooper in 20th Century Studios’ upcoming The Devil Wears Prada 2, according to an Entertainment Weekly report citing two sources familiar with the situation. The news was also confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Grenier played Andy Sachs’ boyfriend, Nate, in the 2006 original, a character who has remained a frequent lightning rod in fan conversations over the years—often criticized for being unsupportive of Andy’s career ambitions during her time at Runway.
EW notes Grenier has previously addressed that backlash, saying his perspective on Nate evolved over time.

The core cast is back — and the sequel has a date
While Grenier is sitting this one out, the sequel is moving forward with major returning names. The studio’s official film page lists The Devil Wears Prada 2 as “Only in theaters May 1, 2026.”
EW reports that the production is bringing back key behind-the-camera talent as well, including director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, who helped define the tone of the first film.
What we know about the sequel so far
Plot specifics are still being kept tightly under wraps, but the industry framing is clear: the sequel is positioned as a continuation of the Runway universe with the original film’s central characters returning. Deadline’s running coverage has tracked official confirmations and casting updates as the film has ramped up.
