That’s because Peter Parker feels like a real person; he deals with school, relationships, and a regular job, while also fighting dangerous villains. His popularity has led to multiple live-action movies over the last two decades.
But just like comics, Spider-Man’s movie timeline can get messy. With different studios involved, changing directors, and multiple versions of the character, we now have Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and Shameik Moore’s animated Spider-Verse version.

After his Uncle Ben dies and teaches him the lesson “With great power comes great responsibility,” Peter decides to use his abilities to protect New York from the Green Goblin, a dangerous villain played by Willem Dafoe.
This film was commercially successful and led directly to the creation of two sequels, establishing Spider-Man as a major film franchise.
2. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Spider-Man 2, released in 2004, is the sequel to Spider-Man (2002) and is the second instalment in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. In this film, Peter Parker, played by Tobey Maguire, fights one of his most famous villains, Otto Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, played by Alfred Molina.
This film happens two years after the first one and includes the famous scene where Spider-Man stops a runaway train using only his strength and webs. Moreover, the movie focuses on Peter Parker struggling to balance his personal life with his responsibilities as Spider-Man.
3. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
This film is the final one where Tobey Maguire plays the lead role of Spider-Man and the last movie in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Unlike the first two movies, which each had only one villain, Spider-Man 3 has three: Flint Marko/Sandman, played by Thomas Hayden Church, Harry Osborn/New Goblin, played by James Franco, and Eddie Brock/Venom, played by Topher Grace. The story is set about a year after the events of Spider-Man 2.
The movie introduces the symbiote storyline, which later becomes important in Sony’s Spider-Man-related spin-off films.
4. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) was the first movie that starred Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, alongside Emma Stone, who played the character of Gwen Stacy. Directed by Marc Webb, it is a reboot of the Spider-Man film series. In this version, Peter Parker fights Doctor Curt Connors, played by Rhys Ifans, who turns into a lizard. Also, The Amazing Spider-Man duology adds a new mystery about what happened to Peter’s parents.
This reboot presented a different interpretation of Peter Parker, with more emphasis on his scientific abilities and his relationship with Gwen Stacy.
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
This is the second and final movie with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and just like Spider-Man 3, it also has three villains in the story. The movie happens two years after the first one and brings Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, and Green Goblin, played by Dane DeHaan. It was also meant to lead into the future Spider-Man movies that would include characters like Venom and Sinister Six.
Several planned spin-offs connected to this version of Spider-Man were later cancelled following changes in Sony’s film strategy.
6. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: Civil War isn’t a Spider-Man movie but it is the first film where Tom Holland appears as Spider-Man. In the movie, Tony Stark asks Peter Parker to join him, and we get to see this new Spider-Man fighting alongside and against other famous Marvel heroes. Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Don Cheadle are the stellar cast members.
This film marked Spider-Man’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after an agreement between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
7. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
This is Tom Holland’s first solo Spider-Man film, which came out in 2017. The movie shows Peter Parker trying to balance high school life while also trying to prove to Tony Stark that he’s responsible enough to join the Avengers.
Even though he’s still a teenager, he works hard to get better as Spider-Man, while facing the villain Vulture, played by Michael Keaton.
Unlike earlier films, this movie does not retell Spider-Man’s origin story and instead focuses on Peter already operating as Spider-Man.
8. Venom (2018)
This was the first movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and it was directed by Ruben Fleischer. Spider-Man doesn’t appear in this film. Venom is part of Sony’s separate Spider-Man Universe, with multiverse connections teased later in post-credit scenes. Future movies show that their worlds are almost linked.
In this film, Eddie is a journalist who is having a tough time, and he gets superpowers when an alien creature called Venom attaches to him. This alien species wants to take over Earth. At the time of its release, the film existed separately from the MCU, with connections clarified later through post-credits scenes in subsequent films.
9. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a separate Spider-Man story but it’s definitely worth watching. It focuses on Miles Morales, played by Shameik Moore, but soon many other versions of Spider-Man from different universes show up, like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, Peter B. Parker and others.
The first animated film in the Spider-Man franchise, it is about Miles becoming the new Spider-Man and joining other Spider-People from different universes to stop the villain Kingpin and save his own world.
This was the first feature-length animated Spider-Man film and introduced the concept of multiple Spider-People from different universes on screen.
10. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Avengers: Infinity War is the sequel to The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). In this film, many Marvel superheroes appear, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is one of them. He is an important part of the story, and his friendship with Tony Stark stands out as one of the best parts of the movie.
The story follows the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy as they try to stop Thanos from collecting all six powerful Infinity Stones, which he wants to use to destroy half of all life in the universe.

11. Avengers: Endgame (2019)

13. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
This film is the sequel to Venom (2018) and the second film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. It isn’t directly connected to the Spider-Man films but it takes place in a related world. The story follows Eddie and Venom as they fight Cletus Kasady, played by Woody Harrelson, a serial killer who becomes the host of a new, dangerous symbiote called Carnage.
14. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). The story follows Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, after everyone learns he’s Spider-Man. His life becomes chaotic, so he asks Doctor Strange to make people forget his secret.
However, the spell goes wrong and opens the multiverse, bringing villains from older Spider-Man movies such as Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Lizard, Electro, and Sandman into the MCU. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield also return, teaming with Tom Holland.
This film connects characters and villains from previous Spider-Man franchises into a single storyline through the multiverse concept.
15. Morbius (2022)
Morbius is the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. It doesn’t show much Spider-Man but it expands the universe connected to him. Morbius is presented as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, but its exact continuity is messy, especially because of its post-credits multiverse setup. It follows Michael Morbius and his brother-like friend Milo, who turn into living vampires after trying to cure their rare blood disease.
The movie takes place within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as indicated by references and post-credit scenes.
16. Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse (2023)
This film is the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and the second film in the Spider-Verse franchise. The story follows Miles as he travels through the multiverse with Gwen. He meets a group of Spider-People led by Spider-Man 2099, but they end up disagreeing on how to deal with a new villain called the Spot.
17. Madame Web (2024)
The fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Madame Web, is directed by S. J. Clarkson. It is connected to Spider-Man but he doesn’t appear in the movie. The film follows Cassandra Webb, played by Dakota Johnson, a paramedic in New York who starts gaining powers to see the future.
She tries to understand her abilities while protecting three young women from a man named Ezekiel Sims, who wants to kill them because he believes they will grow up to become Spider-Women and defeat him in the future.
18. Venom: The Last Dance (2024)
Written and directed by Kelly Marcel, this film is the sequel to Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). The story follows Eddie and Venom as they escape and hide because people from both the human world and the alien symbiote world are after them.
19. Kraven the Hunter (2024)
Kraven the Hunter (2024) is the sixth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The story shows Kraven’s bond with his father and how he eventually becomes a skilled and powerful hunter.
While the movie doesn’t feature Spider-Man directly, it establishes Kraven as a character who is traditionally a major antagonist of Spider-Man in the comics.
20. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)
Coming out on July 31st, 2026, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a new MCU movie in which Tom Holland will return as Spider-Man. The movie will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, Marvin Jones III, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, and Tramell Tillman will join the cast.
Story details haven’t been officially revealed yet, but the film is set to continue Tom Holland’s Spider-Man journey in the MCU.
21. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027)
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the third Spider-Verse film. It was supposed to come out in 2024 but now it’s officially set to release on June 18th, 2027. The story picks up after the ending of Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles stuck in a different universe while trying to rescue his family.
