Warner Bros surprised everyone in 2023 by officially announcing a new Harry Potter TV series. The project is a big return to the Wizarding World as HBO is making a new version of the story that will start fresh and tell J.K. Rowling’s original Harry Potter books from the beginning. Instead of spinoffs and prequels, the series will focus on the main story, using a full season to explore each book in more detail than the films.
Filming of the series has started, and early comments from HBO executives and actor Warwick Davis suggest that it will closely follow the books while giving more details to scenes that fans already know.
While an official release date has not been announced yet, updates are coming, such as new casting details and the reveal that Hans Zimmer (along with his team) will compose the series’ music. So, here’s everything we know about the Harry Potter television series.

When Will the Harry Potter TV Series Premiere?
HBO’s new Harry Potter TV series is currently expected to come out around 2027, based on the comments made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. He said back in late 2024 that 2027 was a possible release year, but he also made it clear that nothing was set because the show was still in the early stages of writing and casting at the time. Even now, HBO has not announced an official premiere date, but since then, major roles have been cast and production has moved forward.
Filming began in the UK in July 2025 with plans to adapt all 7 Harry Potter books into seven seasons. One of the biggest challenges is timing, since the main actors are children and will grow quickly. HBO wants to avoid long gaps between seasons so the characters don’t age too quickly.
Moreover, Casey Bloys, HBO’s CEO, has said that releasing 1 season every year would be difficult, but the team is working to keep the gaps as short as possible. By November 2025, work on Season 2 has already begun, which shows that HBO wants to keep the series moving without long delays.
Who Is in the Cast of the Harry Potter TV Series?
The cast of HBO’s Harry Potter TV series includes some young actors and well-known names. In May 2025, HBO revealed 3 main child leads after a massive casting search. Season 1 of the show will also feature Bríd Brennan as Madam Pomfrey, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Sirine Saba as Professor Sprout, Richard Durden as Professor Binns, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Outside Hogwarts, Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will appear as Petunia and Vernon Dursley, with Amos Kitson as Dudley.
The Weasley family includes Katherine Parkinson as Molly, Ruari Spooner as Percy, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny, and Tristan and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George. Other cast members include Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Anton Lesser as Ollivander, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Leigh Gill as Griphook, and Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch.

HBO has not announced yet who will appear as Voldemort in the new Harry Potter TV series. Some famous actors are being discussed as possible choices, but their names have not been confirmed yet. A well-known industry leaker also posted on his Twitter account that the series is testing both male and female actors for the role, which means Voldemort could be played by a woman.
What Will the Harry Potter TV Series Be About?
As mentioned earlier, the new Harry Potter TV series will cover all seven books that were released between 1997 and 2007. With regard to this, HBO Max has explained in a statement, “The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”
Further, it said, “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
