Mortal Kombat 2 Delayed Seven Months, Now Set for May 2026

Date:

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have officially pushed the release of Mortal Kombat 2 back by seven months, moving the sequel’s theatrical debut from October 24, 2025 to May 15, 2026, a decision confirmed by multiple industry outlets.

The announcement came in late August 2025, surprising fans and industry watchers alike since the film has already completed production and been screened for press. Originally positioned as an October 2025 tentpole, the movie was expected to kick off the fall season alongside a range of other high-profile releases. Instead, the studio opted for an early summer slot next year, traditionally a more lucrative window for action blockbusters.

According to the official Mortal Kombat movie accounts and reporting from Deadline, the decision wasn’t the result of production delays, the film wrapped shooting, including a midshoot pause during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and editing months ago. Rather, the shift appears strategic, aimed at giving Mortal Kombat 2 breathing room in a less crowded release calendar and maximizing box office potential.

Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story from the 2021 film directed by Simon McQuoid, based on the iconic video game franchise. The sequel reunites key cast members — including Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, while introducing Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, a character whose inclusion has generated strong interest thanks to a record-breaking red-band trailer that amassed over 100 million views.

Industry analysts suggest that placing the film in a May release slot positions it to take advantage of the early summer box office surge, rather than competing directly with other major releases in October. That period often favors franchise films with broad action appeal, helping them build momentum through the summer.

The new May 2026 date also aligns Mortal Kombat 2 with a slate of other anticipated genre films, offering a clearer runway for marketing campaigns and fan engagement ahead of its launch.
