Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: When It Will Come Out, Who Will Be in It, and What Else We Know

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Release Date

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Release Date

Without a doubt, the Guardians of the Galaxy film series ranks among MCU’s finest moments. Before the film’s release, almost no one had heard of the team’s existence, and many people wondered why Marvel Studios would gamble so much money on something so unproven. These heroes are now considered among the most well-known in the history of comic book films.

Due to the team’s immense popularity, moviegoers have been anticipating the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for years. Finally, the film is on its way to theatres, albeit it has taken its sweet time getting here. Exactly what do we know regarding this undertaking? When will it be available for purchase? If so, whose hands are crafting it? So, who do we expect to show up? This newest entry in our What We Know So Far series is dedicated to answering these and other questions about the forthcoming intergalactic adventure, so read on to learn what we currently know.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Release Date Is Set For May 2023

The release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been unknown for a long time, and this is due to a number of factors that we shall discuss in greater detail below. Behind-the-scenes chaos and the COVID-19 epidemic messed up the movie’s original release schedule, which saw it debuting early in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans have known for years that a movie is being made, but they have had no idea when it could be released.

As previously announced, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will now debut as the second film in Phase 5, rather than in Phase 4. Its May 5, 2023 release date places it after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania by Peyton Reed and before Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels by a few months. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Has Released Its First Trailer

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s first teaser premiered at CCXP, also known as Brazil Comic Con, in December 2022. James Gunn’s conclusion to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy promises to take Marvel fans on quite a ride with its excellent blend of dramatic weight and lighthearted humor.

Among the many returning actors and actresses shown in the clip are Chukwudi Iwuji, who plays The High Evolutionary, and Will Poulter, who plays Adam Warlock, in their first public appearances from the film.

What Are The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Rating?

Deadpool, directed by Tim Miller in 2016, was a watershed moment for superhero movies. The Merc With a Mouth disproved the notion that superhero films have to be PG-13 in order to succeed by grossing $783.1 million worldwide despite featuring a large number of cuss words, some brief scenes of undress, and extreme violence. While other studios have taken the R-rated blockbuster jump since then (see: Deadpool 2 and Logan), Marvel Studios has yet to do so. Even if we do see it in the future, we can rest assured that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be rated PG-13.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Writer/Director

Prepare for a ride, because this one goes somewhere. It came as little surprise when, in early 2017, James Gunn revealed that he has signed up with Marvel Studios to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and that the film would “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy.” He authored the screenplay for the picture, and plans were already in action to have its debut early in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s film slate.

In any case, that was before the pivot. One of James Gunn’s critics on Twitter dredged up some of the director’s old Tweets from nearly a decade ago in the days leading up to San Diego Comic-Con 2018, sparking a firestorm over Gunn’s political views. Walt Disney Company, known for its family-friendly films, found itself in an uncomfortable position after Gunn’s social media comments, which included incredibly offensive jokes about horrific subjects, went viral.

This was, of course, just the beginning of the debate. Not only did fans rally around James Gunn in the days, weeks, and months that followed (with over 400,000 signing a petition for his reinstatement), but many of his colleagues did as well. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, and Michael Rooker, among others, all signed an open letter demanding that Gunn be reinstated as director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and many other directors also spoke out in support of Gunn. Filmmakers Edgar Wright, Taika Waititi, Chris Lord, and Phil Miller all made it clear that they supported James Gunn and had no interest in taking over as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 if he were to leave.

It was uncertain how Marvel Studios would be able to move forward with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but by the middle of March 2019, the matter had been resolved. After Captain Marvel’s success, it was announced that James Gunn would return to direct the final installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. This coincided with some scheduling adjustments for the movie, as Gunn had spent his time after being dismissed negotiating a deal with Warner Bros. to pen and helm The Suicide Squad. The sequel to the smash hit film is back on track now.

In light of Gunn’s promotion as co-CEO of DC Studios, it’s safe to assume that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his last film set in the MCU. The expectation is very strong that he will have a fantastic final season with the team.

Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) (Chris Pratt)

Taking on the part of Peter Quill, or Star-Lord, had an immediate and profound impact on Chris Pratt’s professional life. One moment he was the beloved buffoon from Parks and Recreation, and the next he was a major Hollywood star. Having joined the ranks of Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Pine as one of pop culture’s “Chrises,” Pratt will bring his considerable star power to his role as Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy were last seen in Thor: Love and Thunder, although they have since abandoned Thor and are planning to reunite in 2023. In terms of Peter’s arc, we have no idea what to expect in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but one thing that immediately comes to mind is the fact that the lady he loves doesn’t even remember who he is and broke up with him after the battle with Thanos. As conclusion…

Gamora (Zoe Saldana) (Zoe Saldana)

It’s time to face facts: the Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel is no more. Thanos tossed her down a cliff as a sacrifice in his attempt to recover the Soul Stone. What happened in Avengers: Infinity War was heartbreaking to watch unfold, and then Avengers: Endgame added its own unique twist. As a result of the events of the enormous Infinity War capstone movie, Gamora is once again part of the modern-day Marvel Cinematic Universe, but as a version from 2014 she missed out on the chance to form close relationships with her colleagues and develop feelings for Peter Quill.

As for Gamora, what will she be doing in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film? From the footage released at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it appears that she will be joining Peter Quill’s old crew, the Ravagers; however, it is yet unknown where she will head next or how she will wind up rejoining the team’s namesake members.

Destroyer Drax (Dave Bautista)

Nobody supported James Gunn as much as Dave Bautista did throughout the “James Gunn getting fired” story. Bautista was very outspoken about how angry he was about the situation, and it was clear that he understood and appreciated how much Gunn had impacted his career by casting him as Drax. Despite the possible damage to his career, he was quite vocal about his anger at Disney and even hinted that he might ask for a release from his contract with the studio if Gunn’s script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wasn’t used.

Dave Bautista has confirmed he will reprise his role as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, now that James Gunn has been brought back on board, but it appears to be the character’s last outing. The next sequel will be the actor’s final appearance in the role, he has announced. Obviously, things might change, as the MCU’s capacity to cycle heroes and villains in and out is one of its many benefits, but for now we’re hopeful that the film will serve as at least a somewhat wonderful send-off for the lovable extraterrestrial.

Rocket (Bradley Cooper)

Worry not, for the rodent with the sharpest wit in the galaxy will return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Rocket, played by Bradley Cooper in the MCU, has had a tough existence that has made him a nasty sonofabitch, yet he stepped up to try to assist the planet after Thanos’ snap. Now that he’s reunited with his family, we might see a hero who is very different from the one we’re used to.

Rocket is James Gunn’s favorite Guardian and the one he can most identify with, therefore he will likely play a significant role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. From what we can gather from the teaser, the film will focus at least on part on his backstory, explaining how he became the intelligent, scarred monster he is now.

Groot (Vin Diesel)

Groot, strangely enough, has the toughest trouble surviving any of the MCU characters. While Baby Groot survived Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, his somewhat older self, Adolescent Groot, was among those reduced to dust by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The original version of the living tree sacrificed himself so that the Guardians of the Galaxy could live through the first movie. Hulk’s snap of the Nano Gauntlet brought Groot back to life in Avengers: Endgame, so he didn’t need to regenerate, and in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we’ll see him enter a new growth phase.

His larger, more adult look in the sequel was initially teased in the SDCC 2022 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 videos, and we’ve since seen him in the teaser and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. We don’t yet know if that’s a result of his increased gym time or if it’s just a natural progression.

Nebula (Karen Gillan)

Karen Gillan’s portrayal of Nebula has followed a path considerably distinct from that of most MCU characters. Though she began as a bitter enemy in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, having initially sided with Thanos and harbouring a deep-seated animosity for Gamora, she was ultimately changed by the experiences she had with her family. She got a wonderful opportunity to interact with Tony Stark and the other Avengers in Avengers: Endgame, and it now appears that she is clearly on the side of the good guys.

Despite the departure of the Guardians from Earth with Thor on board, Nebula remained on the planet to attend Tony Stark’s funeral. We hope she gets the chance to meet up with her adopted sister in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and that they can spend a lot of time working together for the greater good.

Mantis (Pom Klemtieff) )

Pom Klementieff brought Mantis to life on the big screen, and after the Guardians of the Galaxy helped her escape from Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, she officially joined the team and put her unique set of extraterrestrial skills to good use. In Guardians of the Galaxy: The Holiday Special, she not only demonstrated her strong empathic abilities by toying with Kevin Bacon’s mind but also demonstrated that, with just a touch, she could put others in a highly suggestive mood.

While we’re on the subject of the Disney+ exclusive, it’s also revealed in the special that Ego was secretly her father and that she is, in fact, Peter Quill’s half-sister. It is likely that this will lead to her and Star-Lord developing more of a friendship in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, however, this has not been confirmed.

The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji)

There will be plenty of new faces in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, including an intriguing new villain, in addition to all of your favorite returning characters. It’s evident that Chukwudi Iwuji made an impression on James Gunn during their time together filming HBO Max’s Peacemaker since the actor has now been cast as The High Evolutionary in Gunn’s upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe installment.

Little is known about The High Evolutionary’s role in the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the trailer hints that he has some connection to Rocket’s torture and eventual creation as we know him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the Marvel comics, he is a ruthless and horrible villain, thus high standards are set for his big-screen debut.

Warlock Adam (Will Poulter)

Adam Warlock’s introduction to the MCU has been teased for quite some time, since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which is even further back in the Marvel universe), but his time has nearly come. Star of The Maze Runner and Dopesick Will Poulter will assume the part of the ideal being in the cosmos for the first time in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It was announced in October 2021 that Poulter would play the lead role in the James Gunn film, and it would be his first time in a superhero movie. Adam Warlock’s function in the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains a mystery, but we can’t wait to see what he brings to the table.

Cosmo The Spacedog (Maria Bakalova)

Astronomically, Cosmo Since we already saw the Spacedog in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, it can’t be considered a “new face” in the third installment, but the sequel will feature a new voice actor. During the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Maria Bakalova was introduced as the voice of Cosmo. In this volume, Cosmo will do more than just growl.

Maria Bakalova’s scene-stealing performance in Jason Woliner’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm made her a household name in 2020, and she has since starred in films by the likes of Judd Apatow and Halina Reijn.

Christmas with the Guardians of the Galaxy

Released on November 25, 2022, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special footage was filmed during the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Streaming subscribers to Disney+ will get access to this exclusive, which serves as a solid teaser for the big film. It is revealed that Star-Lord and Mantis are related and that the team has purchased Knowhere from Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector, and is currently in control of the planet.
